Tempted By A Rogue edition by Lauren Smith Aleta Rafton Romance eBooks Reviews
The frequency of my romantic novel reading has increased in recent months, primarily because my wife has been on a major kick. At first, I wasn't a big fan, because I thought the language was often trite and hackneyed. I wasn't disparaging of the entire genre, but I definitely had my opinions about it. However, I have been impressed how the romance genre seems to be improving over the years. It's no longer defined by cheap pulp that has very little plot, and simply offers steamy descriptive scenes that vaguely tie together. Tempted by A Rogue is decidedly different than that. We see a real relationship outlined in stunning letters and confessions of passion, and we also see a unique role reversal of genders, where Jasper is so desperate not to lose this woman, and only fears rejection when she discovers who he really is.
The tension in these pages is palpable, and there was considerable time spent in detailing the setting, providing backstory, keeping the flow of the narrative even, and detailed edits to sharpen certain sections. I think this was a labor of love, and while it has plenty of traditional romance novel elements, it is a higher caliber - and certainly a more interesting story. Nicely Done.
This was a nice little short story with a little spice to it.
While the story was quick, the author did a good job of fleshing out the characters.
It almost feels like this is the free introduction to a future full-length novel. There are lots of things here that could be expanded on. I really wanted to have more about James, who was a truly terrible person and deserved to have some misery sent his way by his new fiancé. To see him get his comeuppance could prove very entertaining. The outspoken matron who figures out the mystery was pretty funny, and could certainly be expanded to be a more integral character. There was lots of room to expand on this story.
The author’s writing style has a nice flow and this book would be a great lunchtime or weekend read when you’re looking for something that’s entertaining but not to serious and doesn't take too long to read.
Tempted by a Rogue, ISBN 9780996207911, a romance in e-book format by Lauren Smith with an additional chapter from another forthcoming book.
The story's setting is Midhurst, West Sussex in 1817 where two of the town's resident sons, James Randolph and Jasper Holland having left in their early teens, are returning from eleven years' service together throughout the world in the Royal Navy. Gemma Haverford, after having been wooed by letter all of these years, is expecting to marry James. Unfortunately, James had become disenchanted and asked Jason to write and dissolve the supposed betrothal. Jason, having had some interest in Gemma when they were still youngsters, writes but procrastinates with `breaking off' the relationship. Instead, he continues to write and discovers Gemma's letters to be most intelligent, charming and in accord with his likes and dislikes. Because James has found someone new he wants to marry and has been informed of Jasper's lack of compliance with his request, insists that Jasper compromise Gemma so he will have a sound reason for disengaging from the unwanted relationship. Jasper attempts the seduction, finds himself completely enamored of the young woman, and the ensuing activities provide a charming, titillating tale of unleashed desire complicated by the mental struggle involving the apparent accompanying deceit, deception and betrayal.
The author has managed most adroitly to set forth, and stretch, a relatively simple plot into an extended delightful interlude that romance devotees should find irresistible.
